Waltham, Mass. is home to one of the Boston area’s best Italian restaurants and Italian wine shops, both owned by Campania native David Maione. La Campania and Vino Italiano are located a few blocks from each other on Main Street and are regular stops on the VinoDuo social calendar. In September, Maione paired the restaurant’s exquisite Neapolitan food with select wines from Campania at a small, multi-course wine dinner we were pleased to attend.

The wines of Campania are varied and include native White grapes like Fiano, Greco di Tufo, and Falanghina and the Red powerhouse Aglianico. We enjoyed Pan Seared Diver Scallops with Saffron Crema, Gnocchi Sorrentina, and Roasted Lamb Chop while tasting five wines from Terredora Dipaolo Winery, a relatively new player [since 1978] in the Campania region’s wine scene. Of the five wines, we passed on the Whites and bought four bottles of the 2015 Aglianico, the best in show.
